What are good goals for 2027?
Good goals for 2027 are specific, measurable and small enough to start this week. "Get healthy" is a wish; "walk 8,000 steps on 5 days a week by March 31" is a goal you can check. Below are 63 goal ideas in seven areas of life, each rewritten as a SMART goal with a first habit, so you can copy one and start on January 1.
The first habit column matters most. A goal describes where you want to be in December; the habit is what you do on a Tuesday in February. Each habit is tied to a moment you already have, like "after dinner" or "on payday", because plans that say when and where you will act have a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals in a meta-analysis of 94 tests by Gollwitzer and Sheeran.
How do you pick your 3 goals for 2027?
Pick three goals, from different areas, and work actively on one or two at a time. A longer list splits your attention, and every new habit needs weeks of practice before it feels easy.
- Score your year so far. Rate eight areas of your life from 1 to 10 on the wheel of life. Your two lowest scores are good candidates.
- Check it against what you value. A goal you picked because you "should" fades first. The core values finder takes five minutes.
- Write it as something to do, not to stop. In a study of 1,066 New Year's resolvers, goals phrased as doing something were more often kept at one year than goals to avoid something (58.9% vs 47.1%).
- Run the WOOP test. Name your wish, the best outcome, the main obstacle inside you and an if-then plan for it. If you cannot name the obstacle, you are not ready to plan the goal.
- Keep the other ideas. Write the rest on a someday list and bring one in at your next quarterly review.
Write your three goals on the yearly sheet of the free goal planner: it has a line for each goal's measure, date, reason and first habit, and lights up the S, M, A, R and T letters as you fill them in.

What is the difference between a goal and a New Year's resolution?
A resolution is usually a promise about who you will be ("I will be healthier"); a goal adds a measure and a finish line ("walk 8,000 steps on 5 days a week by March 31"). Both work better as small daily habits. If you want resolution ideas written as tiny habits rather than full goals, see the 65 New Year's resolution ideas you can actually keep. This page is for people who want a target, a date and a plan to review.
2027 goal timeline: what to do from January to December
A goal set on January 1 and checked on December 31 has eleven months to drift. Put a check-in on your calendar for each of these dates now; the 2027 calendar prints all of them on one page.
| When |

| Late December 2026 |

Tracking each step helps. Across 138 studies reviewed by Harkin and colleagues, monitoring progress improved goal attainment, and more so when progress was written down or reported.
How do you turn a 2027 goal into a daily habit?
Break the goal down three times: year, quarter, week. Then choose the one daily habit that moves it forward.
- Year: "Run a 5K without stopping by June 30."
- Quarter: three milestones, one a month. January: walk-run 3 times a week for 4 weeks. February: run 10 minutes without stopping. March: run 2 miles.
- Week: one action. "Three 20-minute walk-runs: 1 minute running, 2 minutes walking."
- Day: one habit tied to a cue. "After work, change into running clothes and walk-run for 20 minutes."
The goal planner has a sheet for each level, and the monthly sheet has a 31-day strip to tick. If you would rather have the daily steps written for you, build a 30-day plan for any goal: you get one small step a day, an easier version for hard days and a reminder on your phone. There are also ready-made 30-day plans for walking, reading, sleep, focus and more, and the 30-day habit building plan fits any goal.
Worked example: one person's three goals for 2027
Maya is 34, works full time and has a young son. She scored health 4, money 5 and friends 4 on the wheel of life.

She works actively on running and friends in Q1 and lets the savings transfer run on its own, because it needs no daily effort once it is set up. On April 1 she reviews: running is on track, the calls happened 9 weeks out of 13, and she moves the text to Saturday morning.
What are common mistakes with goals for the new year?
- Too many goals. Ten goals means no goal gets the attention it needs. Three is plenty; one is fine.
- Outcome only, no habit. "Save $1,000" without "move $30 on Friday" leaves you waiting for motivation.
- All or nothing. Missing one day is not failure. In a real-world study of 96 adults, missing a single day did not materially affect habit formation, and habits took 18 to 254 days to feel automatic.
- No review dates. Without check-ins, goals quietly fade by February. Put the timeline dates on your calendar now.
- Copying someone else's goals. A goal from a list only works if you want it. Use the lists here for wording, not for choosing.
What does research say about setting goals?
Decades of research on goal setting, summarized by Locke and Latham (2002), found that specific, challenging goals led to better performance than vague goals such as "do your best", especially when people got feedback on their progress. Most of those studies were about work tasks, so treat the finding as a strong hint for personal goals, not a promise.
Plans help as well as targets. If-then plans ("If it is 6 p.m., then I walk") had a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals across 94 tests. Combining those plans with mental contrasting, the method behind WOOP, had a smaller but real effect: a 2021 meta-analysis of 24 studies with 15,907 people found a small-to-medium effect on goal attainment, larger in face-to-face sessions than in written exercises.
The limits: most studies ran for weeks or months, not a whole year, and people who volunteer for goal studies may be more motivated than average. None of this guarantees a result. It does suggest that a specific goal, a when-and-where plan, a named obstacle and a written record are worth the ten minutes they take.
Where should you go from here?
Pick your three goals from the lists above and write them on the goal planner's yearly sheet. Print the full 2027 planner set if you like planning on paper, or make a 2027 vision board to keep the picture in front of you. Then choose the first habit for your most important goal and turn it into a 30-day plan. More ideas for building habits that last are in the habit building hub.
