Time assumes about 100 steps a minute walking, 120 brisk and 163 running. Your own pace may differ.

The short answer
It takes about 2,000 to 2,500 steps to walk a mile, depending on your height and pace, so 10,000 steps is roughly 4 to 5 miles (6.3 to 7.6 km). To convert steps to miles yourself, multiply your steps by your step length, about 41% of your height, and divide by 63,360 inches.

How many steps are in a mile?
About 2,000 to 2,500 steps at a walking pace for most adults. A 5'0" person takes about 2,550 steps to walk a mile at an easy pace; a 6'0" person about 2,130. Walking briskly lengthens each step, so a mile takes roughly 10% fewer steps, and running takes about 1,500 to 1,800. In a pedometer study, adults took about 1,940 steps to walk a mile at 4 mph and about 1,630 to run one at 6 mph.
| Height | Walking | Brisk walk | Running |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5'0" (152 cm) | 2,551 | 2,319 | 1,799 |
| 5'4" (163 cm) | 2,391 | 2,174 | 1,687 |
| 5'8" (173 cm) | 2,251 | 2,046 | 1,587 |
| 6'0" (183 cm) | 2,126 | 1,932 | 1,499 |
Steps per kilometer are the mile figure divided by 1.61: about 1,300 to 1,600 steps per km walking.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4 to 5 miles (6.3 to 7.6 km) at a walking pace, depending on your height: roughly 3.9 miles at 5'0", 4.4 miles at 5'8" and 4.7 miles at 6'0". Walk briskly and the same 10,000 steps cover about 10% more ground. At about 100 steps a minute, 10,000 steps is around 1 hour 40 minutes of walking, spread across your day.
How the steps to miles calculation works
- Step length. A step is the distance from one heel to the next heel strike of the other foot. Pedometers estimate it as about 41 to 42% of your height at an easy walk. A study of 130 young adults found real steps at a moderate walk were about 10% longer than that estimate, which is why pace matters.
- Distance. Steps × step length. With a 28-inch step, 10,000 steps is 280,000 inches, or 4.42 miles (5,280 feet, or 63,360 inches, make a mile).
- Miles to steps. The reverse: distance ÷ step length. One mile ÷ 28 inches is about 2,260 steps.
"Stride" is used two ways. Fitness trackers usually mean one step. In gait research a stride is two steps (left plus right), so a stride length is about twice your step length. This calculator uses steps.
How to measure your own step length
The height rule is an estimate; your real step can differ by 10% or more. For a better number, walk a known distance at your usual pace, such as one lap of a 400-meter track (about a quarter mile), and count your steps. Divide the distance by the steps and enter the result under "I know my step length". Measure again for running: running steps are much longer.
Where 10,000 steps a day came from
The number has a marketing origin, not a lab one. It traces back to Japanese walking clubs and a business slogan in the 1960s: a pedometer sold in Japan was called manpo-kei, roughly "10,000-step meter". Researchers later found that 10,000 steps a day is a reasonable marker of an active adult, and that healthy adults typically take anywhere from 4,000 to 18,000 steps a day.
What research says about daily steps
A 2022 meta-analysis pooled 15 studies of about 47,000 adults. More daily steps went with a steadily lower risk of dying during follow-up, and the benefit leveled off at about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults 60 and older and at about 8,000 to 10,000 steps for younger adults. These were observational studies, so they show a link, not proof of cause. If you are well below those numbers, adding 2,000 to 2,500 steps a day, the typical gain in step-count programs, is a realistic first goal. Read how many steps a day you should walk for the full picture, and whether walking is enough exercise.
Steps and walking time
At about 100 steps a minute, walking counts as moderate-intensity activity for most adults, so a brisk 30-minute walk is roughly 3,000 to 3,600 steps. Around 130 steps a minute marks vigorous walking. Check your pace by counting steps for 15 seconds and multiplying by four. To make walking a daily habit, start small and tie it to something you already do.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
About 2,000 to 2,500 steps at a walking pace for most adults. Shorter people take more steps: about 2,550 at 5'0" and 2,130 at 6'0" at an easy pace. Brisk walking takes about 10% fewer steps, and running about 1,500 to 1,800.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4 to 5 miles, or 6.3 to 7.6 km, at a walking pace. It is about 3.9 miles for someone 5'0" tall, 4.4 miles at 5'8" and 4.7 miles at 6'0".
How many steps is 5 km?
About 6,600 to 7,900 steps at a walking pace for most adults, depending on height. Walking briskly or running a 5K takes fewer steps because each step is longer.
How many steps are in a kilometer?
About 1,300 to 1,600 steps at a walking pace. Divide 1,000 meters by your step length in meters; with a 70 cm step that is about 1,430 steps.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
About 1 hour 40 minutes at 100 steps a minute, a moderate walking pace, or about 1 hour 25 minutes at a brisk 120 steps a minute. Most people collect them across the day rather than in one walk.
How accurate is a steps to miles estimate?
Height-based estimates are usually within about 10% of your real distance, but step length changes with pace, terrain and fatigue. In one study, measured steps at a moderate walk were about 10% longer than the height rule. For a better number, measure your own step length.
Is stride length the same as step length?
Not quite. Fitness trackers often use "stride" to mean one step. In gait research a stride is two steps, left and right, so it is about twice as long. This calculator uses step length.
Do I need 10,000 steps a day?
No single number fits everyone. The 10,000 target began as a pedometer slogan in Japan. In a 2022 analysis of 15 studies, the lower risk of death leveled off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day in adults 60 and older and 8,000 to 10,000 in younger adults.

For adults — Healthy adults typically take 4,000 to 18,000 steps a day; programs raise steps by about 2,000 to 2,500 a day; about 100 steps a minute is moderate walking. In pedometer data summarized here, adults took about 1,936 steps to walk a mile at 4 mph and 1,631 to run one at 6 mph.
