The short answer

To count the days since a date, subtract it from today's date. From January 1 to October 1, 2026 is 273 days. Enter any date above to see the days since or until it, in weeks, months, weekdays and hours. Add 1 if you want to count both the first and the last day, as for an event that ran from one date to another.

How many days since a date? The math

Subtract the earlier date from the later one. The result is the number of days that have passed, which is how calendars and most calculators count: from Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. If you want both days included, as in "the event ran from the 1st to the 3rd", add 1.

ExampleDays betweenCounting both days
Jan 1 to Jan 3130 days31 days
Jan 1 to Dec 31 (not a leap year)364 days365 days
Jan 1, 2026 to today (Oct 2)274 days275 days

To do it by hand, count the days left in the first month, add the full months in between (January 31, February 28 or 29, March 31, April 30 and so on) and add the days in the last month. Leap years add February 29 every four years, except years divisible by 100 but not by 400. The counter above handles all of that, and also shows the gap in weeks, months, weekdays (Monday to Friday) and hours.

How the streak counter works

A streak counts every day from your start date to today, so a streak that starts today is on day 1. It counts on its own: you do not need to tick anything. If you slip, press I slipped: start again. The run you finished is saved as a past run, your best streak stays, and day 1 is today.

A slip is not a reset to zero. In a study of 96 people building a daily habit, missing a single day did not meaningfully slow how fast the habit became automatic (Lally et al., 2010). What matters is starting again the next day. If you want to tick off each day instead, use the habit tracker or a 100 day challenge chart.

Milestones come at day 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 50, 66, 100, 150, 200, 365, 500, 730 and 1,000. Day 66 is there because it was the median time to automaticity in that study; the range was 18 to 254 days, so your number may differ.

Frequently asked questions

How many days has it been since a date?

Enter the date above and choose Days since. The counter shows the number of days from that date to today, plus the same gap in weeks, in months and days, in weekdays and in hours. It updates on its own each day.

Does the day counter include the start date?

Days since and Days until count the days between the two dates, the way calendars do: from Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. The line under the result also gives the count with both days included. A streak counts the start date as day 1.

How do I count the days until a date?

Choose Days until and pick the date. You get the days left, not counting today, with weeks, weekdays and the dates 30, 60 and 90 days from now. For Christmas, the Christmas countdown also shows hours and minutes.

How does the streak counter work?

Pick the day your streak started; that day is day 1 and the counter adds a day each day on its own. If you slip, press I slipped: start again. The finished run is kept, your best streak stays, and today becomes day 1.

Can I save more than one counter?

Yes. Press Save this counter for each one, for example a sober date, a new job and a trip. Up to 12 counters stay in this browser on this device, and tapping one opens it.

How do I share a day counter?

Press Share. On a phone you can send it straight to a message or app; on a computer a link is copied. Anyone who opens the link sees the same counter, counted to their own today. Save as image makes a phone-sized picture.

How many weekdays are between two dates?

The counter shows weekdays, Monday to Friday, from the first date up to but not including the second. It does not remove public holidays, so take those off if you need business days for work.

Sources and evidence

  1. Lally et al. (2010): How are habits formed — In 96 volunteers repeating one daily behavior, the time to reach near-automaticity ranged from 18 to 254 days with a median of 66; missing one opportunity did not materially affect the habit's progress.
  2. Harkin et al. (2016): Does monitoring goal progress promote goal attainment? — Across 138 studies, monitoring progress improved goal attainment, more so when progress was physically recorded or reported.
